Dollywood theme park roller coaster and family rides in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee

Dollywood is the #1 reason most families visit Pigeon Forge — and for good reason. It's consistently rated one of the best theme parks in the country, with a mix of thrill rides, kid-friendly attractions, live entertainment, and genuine Smoky Mountain charm. But going with kids requires a game plan. Here's everything we've learned from sending hundreds of guest families to the park.

When to Visit Dollywood

Timing matters more than almost anything else when it comes to having a great Dollywood day with kids:

  • Best months: Late April through mid-May, and September through mid-October. The weather is comfortable, crowds are manageable, and the park's seasonal festivals (Flower & Food Festival in spring, Harvest Festival in fall) add extra entertainment.
  • Avoid if possible: July 4th week, Memorial Day weekend, and the first two weeks of October (peak fall foliage = peak crowds). If you must go during peak times, arrive at park opening.
  • Best day of the week: Tuesday through Thursday. Weekends are the busiest, and Monday can be crowded because many families use it as their "park day."
  • Arrive at opening: The first 2–3 hours have the shortest lines. Hit the popular rides first, then slow down for shows and food in the afternoon.

Best Rides for Kids by Age

Toddlers & Preschoolers (Ages 2–5)

Dollywood has an excellent selection for little ones in the Country Fair and Wildwood Grove areas:

  • Busy Bees: A gentle spinning ride that toddlers love. No height requirement.
  • Lucky Ducky: A classic carnival-style ride with floating ducks. Calm and fun for the youngest visitors.
  • Dragonflier (Wildwood Grove): A suspended family coaster with a 39" height requirement. Smooth enough for brave preschoolers, exciting enough for parents.
  • Hidden Hollow: An indoor play area in Wildwood Grove with climbing structures, slides, and interactive elements. Perfect for burning energy or escaping rain.
  • Black Bear Trail: A gentle outdoor ride through the woods on a bear-themed train. Great for all ages.

Elementary Kids (Ages 6–10)

This is the sweet spot for Dollywood. Kids this age can ride almost everything and are old enough to appreciate the shows:

  • Blazing Fury: An indoor dark ride with a mild roller coaster section. Exciting without being scary — a great first "big kid" ride.
  • FireChaser Express: A family launch coaster that goes forward AND backward. 39" height requirement. This is the ride most kids talk about after.
  • Whistle Punk Chaser: A junior coaster in Wildwood Grove. Perfect stepping stone to the bigger coasters.
  • River Rampage: A whitewater rafting ride. You will get wet. Kids love it. Bring a change of clothes or buy a poncho at the park.
  • Dollywood Express: A real steam train that circles the park. Relaxing, educational, and a good way to rest your feet.

Tweens & Teens (Ages 11+)

Older kids and teens will want to hit the thrill rides:

  • Lightning Rod: The world's fastest wood-launch coaster. Intense and incredible. 48" height requirement.
  • Wild Eagle: A wing coaster where your feet dangle free. Smooth and scenic — great views of the mountains at the top.
  • Mystery Mine: A dark ride/coaster hybrid with a 48" requirement. The theming is excellent.
  • Drop Line: A 230-foot drop tower. Not for the faint of heart, but teens love it.
  • Big Bear Mountain: The newest family coaster (opened 2023). A long, smooth ride through the mountains with great theming. 39" requirement — works for a wide age range.

Food Tips

Dollywood's food is genuinely good — better than most theme parks. Here's what to know:

  • Don't miss the cinnamon bread: The Grist Mill near the park entrance makes fresh cinnamon bread all day. The line is always long, but it's worth it. Buy it on your way out so it's warm for the drive home.
  • Eat lunch early or late: The food lines peak between 11:30 AM and 1:00 PM. Eat at 11:00 or 1:30 to avoid the worst of it.
  • Bring water bottles: You can bring sealed water bottles into the park. Refill at water fountains. This saves money and keeps everyone hydrated.
  • The Lumber Jack's Pizza stand in Wildwood Grove is quick and kid-friendly.
  • For a sit-down meal: Front Porch Café has good Southern food and air conditioning — a welcome combo on hot days.

Money-Saving Tips

  • Buy tickets online in advance: Dollywood's website often has discounts for advance purchases, and you skip the ticket window line.
  • Consider a 2-day ticket: The per-day cost drops significantly, and you won't feel rushed to see everything in one day.
  • TimeSaver pass: If you're going during peak season, the TimeSaver (Dollywood's version of FastPass) is worth the splurge with kids. Standing in long lines with tired children is nobody's idea of fun.
  • Parking: Standard parking is included. Preferred parking is closer but costs extra — worth it if you have a stroller and tired kids at the end of the day.
  • Pack snacks: You can bring snacks (no glass containers or coolers). Granola bars, fruit, and crackers save money and prevent meltdowns.

What to Pack

  • Sunscreen and hats (limited shade on some rides and walkways)
  • Comfortable walking shoes (the park is hilly — flip-flops are a mistake)
  • A change of clothes if you plan to ride River Rampage or visit Splash Country
  • A lightweight rain jacket or poncho (afternoon showers are common in summer)
  • A small backpack or stroller bag for water, snacks, and sunscreen
  • A portable phone charger (you'll be taking a lot of photos)
