Fall in the Smokies: Your Complete Guide to Autumn in the Mountains
Peak foliage, scenic drives, harvest festivals, and cozy cabin nights — everything you need to plan the perfect fall trip.

There's a reason the Great Smoky Mountains are one of the most visited destinations in the country during fall. Over 100 species of native trees turn the mountainsides into a patchwork of gold, orange, crimson, and burgundy — and the views from a cabin porch with a cup of coffee are hard to beat. Here's everything you need to know to plan your fall Smokies trip.
When to Visit for Peak Foliage
Fall color in the Smokies doesn't happen all at once — it rolls down the mountains over about six weeks, which means you have a wide window to catch it:
- Early October: Color starts at the highest elevations (5,000+ feet) along the Blue Ridge Parkway and Clingmans Dome. Expect yellows and early oranges.
- Mid-October: The sweet spot for most visitors. Color is vibrant at mid-elevations and starting to reach the valleys. Scenic drives are spectacular.
- Late October – Early November: Peak color hits the lower elevations around Pigeon Forge, Sevierville, and Gatlinburg. This is when the views from Cubby Bear Den's deck and fire pit are at their best.
- Mid-November: Late-season color lingers in the valleys. Crowds thin out, and cabin rates are often lower — a great time for a quiet getaway.
Best Scenic Drives for Fall Color
Cades Cove Loop (11 miles)
The most popular drive in the park for good reason. The one-way loop road winds through a historic valley surrounded by mountains, with wildlife sightings (deer, turkeys, and sometimes bears) along the way. In fall, the valley floor turns golden while the surrounding ridges blaze with color. Go early in the morning to avoid crowds — the road opens at sunrise. About 45 minutes from Cubby Bear Den.
Newfound Gap Road
This is the main road through the park, climbing from Gatlinburg (1,400 feet) to Newfound Gap (5,046 feet) before descending into Cherokee, NC. In fall, you'll drive through multiple elevation zones of color in a single trip. Stop at the overlooks — the views are incredible. About 30 minutes from the cabin to the Gatlinburg entrance.
Foothills Parkway
A less-crowded alternative with some of the best panoramic views in the area. The western section between Walland and Chilhowee has sweeping mountain vistas that are stunning in fall. About 40 minutes from Cubby Bear Den.
Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail
A one-way loop near Gatlinburg that winds through old-growth forest. In fall, the canopy overhead turns into a tunnel of color. Several short hikes branch off the road, including the trail to Grotto Falls. About 30 minutes from the cabin.
Fall Festivals & Events
Dollywood's Harvest Festival (September – October)
Dollywood goes all-out for fall with thousands of hand-carved pumpkins, live bluegrass and gospel music, and Southern food vendors throughout the park. The Great Pumpkin LumiNights evening event features illuminated pumpkin displays that are genuinely impressive. Dollywood is about 10 minutes from Cubby Bear Den.
Gatlinburg Craftsmen's Fair (October)
One of the best craft shows in the Southeast, held at the Gatlinburg Convention Center. Over 180 artisans demonstrate and sell handmade goods — woodworking, pottery, jewelry, quilts, and more. A great place to pick up unique souvenirs. About 25 minutes from the cabin.
Sevierville Events
Sevierville hosts various fall food and music events throughout the season. Check the Sevierville events calendar for current listings.
Best Fall Hikes
Laurel Falls (2.6 miles round trip, easy)
A paved trail leading to an 80-foot waterfall. In fall, the surrounding forest is gorgeous, and the waterfall framed by autumn color makes for great photos. The trail is popular, so go early. About 35 minutes from Cubby Bear Den.
Alum Cave Trail (4.4 miles round trip, moderate)
One of the most scenic hikes in the park. The trail passes through old-growth forest, across a log footbridge, and under dramatic rock overhangs before reaching Alum Cave Bluffs. In fall, the forest canopy is spectacular. About 40 minutes from the cabin.
Porters Creek Trail (4 miles round trip, easy)
A quieter alternative to the more popular trails. This easy walk follows a creek through a forest that's beautiful in fall, passing old stone walls and the remains of a historic settlement. About 35 minutes from Cubby Bear Den.
Cozy Cabin Activities for Fall Evenings
Some of the best fall moments happen right at the cabin. Here's what our guests love about Cubby Bear Den during autumn:
- Fire pit s'mores: The fire pit area has Adirondack seating and string lights. Grab marshmallows from Publix (8 minutes away) and settle in for the evening.
- Hot tub under the stars: There's nothing quite like soaking in the hot tub on a crisp fall night with the mountain air and the sound of crickets.
- Game room tournaments: When it gets dark early, the game room comes alive. Arcade games, foosball, and board games keep everyone entertained.
- Porch coffee mornings: The covered deck with rocking chairs is the perfect spot to watch the morning mist rise through the fall-colored trees with a hot cup of coffee.
Fall Trip Planning Tips
- Book early: Fall is peak season in the Smokies. Cabins and popular restaurants fill up fast, especially for October weekends.
- Layer up: Fall temperatures in the mountains can swing from the 70s during the day to the 40s at night. Bring layers.
- Check road conditions: Some higher-elevation roads in the park may close temporarily due to weather. Check the NPS road conditions page before heading out.
- Avoid weekends if possible: Mid-week visits mean fewer crowds on trails and scenic drives, and often better cabin rates.
- Bring binoculars: Fall is a great time for wildlife viewing, especially in Cades Cove. Bears are fattening up for winter and are more active.
